Today was the final day of my Breastfeeding Buddy training course, and I had to have my practical assessment to check that I know my stuff before I got my certificate and the all important pink t-shirt – my new buddy “uniform”!

Rather embarrassingly, we also had our photograph taken as a group for a press release! Hopefully we will be featured in the local news soon to promote the service we have been trained to provide. I will try to remember to post it here if we’re on any of the local news sites :-).
In order to celebrate our last day (and to fine tune my cupcake & buttercream recipes for Georgie’s birthday) I whipped up a batch of cupcakes to share with the rest of the trainees and the staff at the children’s centre. After asking for opinions on the matter via twitter, I decided to decorate the cakes as boobs to match the theme of the training course! Read on for my recipes & photos of the finished result…
Cupcakes:
This recipe makes 12 cupcakes (I doubled up the quantities to make 24 for my boob cakes).
Ingredients:
- 4 oz butter, room temperature
- 4 oz caster sugar
- 4 oz self raising flour
- 2 medium/large eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
Method:
- Pre-heat your oven to 200°C/gas mark 6
- Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl, beat well
- Spoon in to the cases – make sure not to overfill your cases!
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, until they are a light golden brown and bounce back when you press lightly on the top
- Remove from oven, and after a few minutes rest move the cakes to a cooling rack to cool down

Buttercream Icing:
Recipe to decorate 12 cupcakes.
Ingredients:
- 110g butter, room temperature
- 400g icing sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 50ml milk
Method:
- Beat together the butter, icing sugar & vanilla extract
- Add the milk a little at a time until you reach the desired consistency
- Add any food colourings (I suggest using the concentrated gel rather than the liquids as it gives you a good colour without your icing getting too runny – you can find them in Asda)
- Use spoons or a piping bag to decorate your cakes – I used the tried & tested two teaspoon method to ice my boobs! The key here is to make sure your cakes are well cooled before decorating. Also, try to create an airtight seal over the top of the sponge with your icing, all the way to the edges of the case, as it stops your cake drying out.
- Add any decorations you want. Asda have a fab range of toppings – I used their edible sugar glitter stuff and iddy biddy marshmallows to make the nipples.
- Store in an airtight container to keep moist.
- Enjoy!!

My boob cakes went down very well and were enjoyed by all! Georgie even managed to persuade the creche staff to share a little bit of theirs with her while I was busy getting assessed in the other room – cheeky scamp!
