On Saturday, a week after she turned three, Lydia had a few friends over to our house for a little birthday party. More like an overgrown play-date with pass the parcel & party snacks, really! At such a young age I really don’t think you need to spend buckets of money on elaborate parties for kids, especially when they only have a few close friends.
It’s a good thing we didn’t plan anything too extreme & kept things casual, as it was postponed with just a few weeks’ notice so that we could go to the Thomas Land blogger event on her birthday, instead. This definitely gave us the best of both worlds in the end, as it was a better date for several of the guests too.
We unfortunately had a few last minute cancellations which left us with Georgie, Lydia, and three guests – including their two very best friends. Trust me, it doesn’t take many small children to make a lot of noise – and five is definitely enough!
The five girls played party games, ran around chasing balloons, explored the girls’ bedroom, coloured in some fairy & farm pictures, ate party food, and went home tired but happy, clutching their adorable party bags filled with random treats I’ve been picking up for a few weeks – but not too many sweet treats! I had prizes on hand for the “best musical statues freezer,” “first to bump down in musical bumps” and various other made up prize-worthy things so that during the party each girl got to choose something from the bowl of goodies at least once.
A few months ago Tiny Pop kindly sent us a Miffy party pack, filled with party bags containing Miffy birthday books, bunting, Tiny Pop keyrings, Miffy balloons, and lots more.
We decorated the room with the Miffy bunting and lots of colourful balloons, and the girls had Miffy napkins with their party food. Lydia loves the adorable bunny and was delighted with her party theme!
It was an exhausting few hours – and an exhausting morning before hand too, as we only just finished the overhaul of the downstairs toilet on the Friday night (ok, ok, I was in there hammering about 2 hours before the party started), and we spent hours straightening up the house before we could even get started on the party prep! As it was the kitchen was completely out of bounds, still being full of DIY stuff… no three years olds in the room full of tools please.
Lydia was absolutely delighted with her party and enjoyed every second of it. Just getting to play with her favourite people for a few hours with plenty of special treats was enough to make our little girl very happy indeed. It was certainly worth the exhaustion. Now to start planning Georgie’s birthday party – penciled in for two months today!
