I haven’t tried my hand at designing any blackwork for a while, so I decided to have some fun creating a collection of geometric patterns within a set of hexagons. I’m delighted to be able to share the finished design as a free printable blackwork pattern for fellow stitchers to enjoy.
The design features seven hexagons, each filled with a different geometric motif and stitched in vibrant rainbow shades, creating a striking geometric blackwork pattern that really stands out against the dark fabric. While I chose to stitch mine on black fabric to make the colours pop, I think it would look lovely on a white background too, although you may want to choose a slightly darker yellow floss if you opt for a lighter fabric.
The download includes two versions of the pattern: an A4 PDF split across several pages, with the floss colour key on the final page as usual, and a single large PDF showing the pattern in its entirety, which is ideal for viewing on a tablet or other digital device. I used my iPad as a reference while stitching this piece, zooming in on each hexagon as I worked through the design.
The hexagons themselves are slightly squashed due to the limitations of creating a pattern on a square grid at this scale. There are a few areas in the central hexagon where you’ll need to split the Aida fabric, and around the edges of most of the hexagons you may find it easier to use a little artistic licence to complete each motif neatly where it meets the outer border.
