Review: 4-in-1 Very Hungry Caterpillar Games Cube + Giveaway!

Review: We really enjoy playing games as a family, and are building up a good collection of games that we can all play together. This 4 in 1 cube has games that the girls can enjoy on their own as well as with James and I – all with the iconic Very Hungry Caterpillar illustrations by Eric Carle.

Inside the box you get four game board pieces that fit together like a jigsaw, a pack of cards, some counters, a spinner, and some picture cards.

The board pieces are double sided – one way around they are four individual bingo cards, and the other way around they fit together to create the 4-Shapes-in-a-Row game board. The picture cards are only used for Matching Bingo, the counters are used in both the bingo and the shapes games, the spinner is used in the shapes game, and the cards are used for both Snap and Twisted Pairs.

For Matching Bingo each player takes a board and pile of counters, and the picture cards are shuffled and placed in the middle face down. Each picture card is turned over and players cover up the matching picture on their board (if they have one!) with a counter. The winner is the first to get five pictures in a row, in any direction.

4-Shapes-in-a-Row uses the spinner, and players work in teams of two with the two types of counters – ladybirds vs caterpillars. You take turns spinning the arrow, and place your counter down on the corresponding shape or colour. If the spinner lands on ladybird you get to remove one of the opposing team’s counters, which adds a nice twist to the game. The aim is to get 4 counters in a row – in any direction – so being able to remove pieces in the way make the game last a little longer.

The packet of playing cards are used for both the Snap and pairs games – both of which have a twist. I’ve never seen snap rules where more than two people can play along; this made it much more fun as several people could play together, as this version has a “snap pot” in the middle as well as each individual’s piles. The Twisted Pairs game also had it’s own spin on the normal memory pairs rules; when you turn over a “Lion Roar” card you have to shout “ROAR!” and mix up all of the remaining cards – so everyone forgets which card is which!

All four of these games are suitable for children aged 3 and above, and Georgie and Lydia certainly had no problems understanding all of the rules. They definitely liked the opportunity for gleeful shouting in three out of four of the games!

The box itself is nice and compact, and is perfect for throwing in the car for holidays and so on – we will definitely be taking it along to our static caravan holiday in June, it is perfect for relaxing back at the caravan with, especially if the weather is unkind to us. The little rope handle on top makes it really easy to carry, too. My only criticism of the box is that although the small picture cards come with a little resealable baggie to keep them safe, the counters do not.

I think this is great value too – at RRP you get four games for £2.75 each, and it’s even cheaper on Amazon. Five stars for this little box of fun.
