Manufacturer’s Description: Meet Boxer: your real robot pal! This plucky little bot comes to life right out of the box and is raring to go – no assembly required! With a love for fun, your new buddy is ready to play!
Review: Expected to be one of the top toys this Christmas, Boxer is a fun interactive palm-sized robot suitable for 6 years+ from Spinmaster. We were sent one of these little guys to review, and the girls think he is great!
Boxer comes with a remote control, micro-USB charging cable, 10 activity cards, an instruction booklet, and a ball. He can charged via any powered USB socket, and has an on/off switch in addition to an auto power off when there is no activity, so the battery lasts a good while.
You can interact with Boxer in a number of ways; he has touch sensors so you can play with him with just your hands, in addition to the remote control driving mode, and playing different activities. He’ll even follow your hand around!
Boxer is full of personality, with his expressive eyes and a huge range of sound effects. He zips around on his six wheels, and frequently falls over backwards whilst exclaiming in dismay, before righting himself.
You can use the included activity cards to play 10 different games with Boxer, and you can also install the Boxer Bot app on your phone and ‘send’ him different activities in addition to the basic 10. The more you play, the more activities you unlock, and there are some great activities to enjoy! My personal favourite is ‘Dance Party’ while the girls enjoy his ‘Soccer’ mode – they even built him a goal from lego bricks to kick his call into. The ‘Fortune Teller’ one is pretty fun, too – he basically tuns into a robotic magic 8 ball. You can even use him as a bowling ball or slingshot, which both work great with some plastic cups as targets.
To use one of his activity cards, you simply press the button on his back and then put him down onto the striped side of the card. He rolls across, reading the barcode type lines, and is ready to play! He’ll let you know if he didn’t read it right, in case you’ve failed to line his wheels up with the guides on the cards, so you can have another go.
To use the app ‘cards’, you just hold the button a little longer so he goes into listening mode, and then you swipe the card and it is sent to him via your phone speakers (it’s so high pitched I can’t even hear it). The app also has example videos for every activity, so with that and the instruction booklet that tells you how to play with him and each of the 10 activity cards, you’ll know exactly how to get the most from your little robot pal. To be honest, most of it is pretty intuitive and the girls have barely bothered with the guides.
Boxer is ready to play with right out of the box which we all know is brilliant when there are impatient kids dying to get started with a new toy! There is nothing worse than having to wait for a toy to charge up or having to hunt down some batteries before you can play.
We give Boxer 5 stars, he is great fun to play with for kids of all ages, and chock full of personality.
