Manufacturer’s Description: It’s another busy day in Sodor and Thomas is Zooming Along at Brendam Docks by Mega Bloks Thomas & Friends™! Now your little conductor can supervise all the activity at the bustling port, as the new motorised Thomas the Tank Engine actually chuffs along the dock’s looping tracks. Send Thomas through the Sodor Shipping Co. warehouse, past the checkpoints, under the coal chute, and over the elevated bridge! Cranky the Crane is there to help too, with his working lifting hook for heavy loads. But the two are happiest when working together, and when Thomas passes by, Cranky starts to spin! Build the docks and track, and use the stickers to add detail to blocks. It’s all in a day’s work with Thomas and Cranky!

Review: Georgie and Lydia really enjoy Thomas and Friends, and they are very into toys that allow them to build or create, too. This playset from Mega Bloks is a lovely way to combine building and playing with trains – with a motorised Thomas rolling along the track with a truck full of coal.

This play set is simply packed in an attractive cardboard box, with a try me hole to allow you to watch Thomas’s wheels spin around. Inside the box you get loads of track pieces and blocks, as well as stickers to decorate the blocks.

The track layout includes a bridge, Cranky on a special platform, a coal shute, and plenty of blocks to build bridges and buildings to accompany your track. You do get quite a lot and it definitely took us a while to put together – the instructions were clear and easy to follow, and Lydia and I had a lot of fun finding the pieces and working out what went where.

The Thomas engine in this set is motorised – he runs on 2 AAA batteries which come included, but can be replaced by unscrewing part of his body. You also get a truck for him to pull along, and two lumps of coal to transport around the docks. The coal chute with its sliding bottom gives your child the ability to load up Thomas’s truck, before sending him on his way to be unloaded by Cranky.

Cranky is on a special platform with some gears inside – when you put down the barrier and Thomas spins his wheel next to the platform, the motorised wheel spins a cog that causes Cranky to spin around. It’s really neat! Stop Thomas’s “engine” or flip the yellow switch on the platform and he stops spinning – and you can then use his adjustable crane to pick up the coal to unload Thomas. Lift up the barrier, and Thomas continues on his way. It is a lot of fun and both girls played with it for ages like this. They did seem to pull the barrier off a lot though as they were a bit heavy handed with it.

At an RRP of £49.99, this isn’t the cheapest toy in the world, but you do get a lot for your money. Over 100 pieces of Mega Bloks, including the motorised Thomas train and the awesome spinning Cranky mechanism. A layout you can build, take apart, and re-build in a different way – and expand with other sets. I think this set would make a great gift for any young Thomas fan this Christmas.

The recommended age range for this toy is 2-5 years and our girls fall straight into the lower and upper ends of that age limit – and both of them love it. In fact, I think you could stretch that upper age a year or two, for true Thomas fans – I enjoyed playing with this set and I am 30!

  1. Our son was given this set by his grandparents and absolutely loved it. However the motorised Thomas engine stopped working properly in 2 days (to be fair probably because he loved it so much he was taking it everywhere, dropping it every now and then and driving it on the rug as well) and so far I have been unable to find a replacement unless we buy another whole set! This set appears to be the only one with a motorised engine and I do not think you can buy one separately, which is a real shame.
