Super Mario Bros 3 Sampler – Cross Stitch Pattern

As we all know, I am a proud geek with a love of gaming, especially Nintendo. I’ve been having a lot of fun playing Mario games lately (I’m looking forward to unwrapping Wonder for Christmas!) and so I thought I would create a cross stitch pattern featuring Mario. The early games are ideal for creating cross stitch patterns from as they have so much amazing pixel art to work from.

I really enjoyed creating this, choosing which game elements and bad guys to include, and laying it all out to balance out the design. I used the characters and so on from Super Mario Bros 3 in particular, and am really pleased with how it has turned out. I really like the combination of a traditional sampler with a ‘modern’ theme like this.

I of course put in Mario and Luigi, as well as Bowser and a variety of bad guys including the infamous goomba. I tried to incorporate everything that is most iconic from the old school Mario games, including the question block, coin, mushroom and a pipe complete with a piranha plant popping out.

The pattern is 141 x 209 stitches, using DMC colours, and the 7 page PDF has a full page version as well as a 5 page breakdown by area to make it easier to follow.

And here’s the finished piece! It’s a touch wonky in the frame, oops. It actually looks better in person than it does on this photo.

Please note: The right hand (green) mushroom has a slight error; his outline on the right side shifted up by one square, so just make it symmetrical to fix that, to match the red mushroom on the other side. I’ll update the PDFs to correct it asap.
