On the final morning of our recent holiday in Dorset, we packed up the caravan and headed to Norden to go for a ride on the steam train at Swanage Railway. Georgie adores trains, so this was the only preplanned activity of our holiday – obviously we checked to find the nearest steam railway before we left!
We started off by taking a train from Norden station all the way to Swanage. The train was a beautiful machine, and nothing quite beats the feeling of chugging along behind a proper steam train.
It was pouring with rain & so at the other end of the line we didn’t go far; just to the gift shop so that the girls could each pick a souvenir of their holiday, and to the buffet car/cafe for some lunch. After that it was time to jump on our return train, stopping off at Corfe Castle on the way.
Instead of walking up to the castle we headed to the model village, which Georgie declared “sounds good”. She loved being a giant amongst all the teeny houses and people! We had fun doing their quiz as we explored the lovely gardens the little village were housed in, and then managed to find a geocache on the way back to the train station.
A third train trip, all of five minutes long, and we were back at Norden station with two very tired little girls. Our day of trains and tiny houses was a lovely end to a holiday. It’s a shame the weather wasn’t better, but we didn’t get rained on too hard!
Next on our steam train to do list has to be one of the Thomas experience days! I’m keeping my eye out for one nearby 🙂
