Last week, Georgie woke up on the morning of her nativity (and our 8th wedding anniversary!) with telltale spots on her face and back. Chicken pox had struck!
The last week of school was cancelled for her then & there, so no nativity performances, no Christmas disco, class party, Christmas lunch, or classroom visit from Santa. Georgie was pretty glum about that – she has been pretty much her normal self apart from being polka dot, so wasn’t too happy to miss all the fun!
So far Lydia hasn’t shown any signs (or spots!) so hopefully she will hold off until after Christmas now, if she gets it at all.
We have some exciting things in the calendar for this holiday, so I’m hoping all four of us will get to go to it all, and chicken pox doesn’t ruin all our plans!
On 22nd we are off to the Barclaycard Arena for Marvel Universe LIVE – yay, superheroes! We will be posting about our experience on the blog, so look out for that. I’m pretty excited as we all really enjoy superhero films & games in this household, and the stunts look amazing.
Then a meal with friends is in the calendar for Christmas Eve Eve, complete with a swapping of Secret Santa gifts. I do like a good mystery present. I wonder who our Secret Santa is!
For Christmas Day itself, we are actually eating out for our Christmas dinner at a hotel. We are eating with James’s mum, and her mum – so needed somewhere close to her nursing home with wheelchair accessibility. I’m pretty happy to skip both the cooking & the clearing as I have done Christmas dinner at home the last few years and we’ve had some pretty stressful Christmases since the kids have been born.
I’m hoping to have a nice relaxing day… stockings in the morning, then out for dinner and home to open up the presents under the tree before all curling up together to watch something Christmassy on the telly. And no washing up required!
James’s birthday is on 27th and he has requested a chocolate birthday cake so I’ll be in the kitchen baking up a storm before the Christmas excitement is over.
On the 28th we are off to the Town Hall to see the play What the Ladybird Heard which is on from 27th Dec to 11th Jan. We’ve been invited along to review so I’ll be writing that up for the blog as well. The girls love live performances and this is an adaptation of a book they really enjoy, so I think it is going to be a lovely morning.
Lots going on! I’m hoping Lydia either has chicken pox straight away so the worst is over by Christmas Day and we can go out for our dinner without any worries, or it waits until after the festivities end! Of course, it may not appear at all.
If the spots appear today or tomorrow they will likely be crusted over and no longer contagious by the big day, but we will probably miss out on our meal out with friends and half of our little family will miss the Marvel show. The ideal timing would be after the 28th sometime! I have a feeling we may have to adjust our plans around the pox a bit this holiday.
Maybe we should get some emergency supplies in the house – just in case a last minute Christmas dinner needs to be whipped up at home!
Oh no. That’s not good timing. We used that virasoothe stuff which is anti-itch but has an anti-scarring ingredient. Bit pricey at around a tenner a tube but it definitely worked. Hope you get to enjoy a relaxing Christmas day!
I hope she feels better asap, Evelyn has also come down with the dreaded chickenpox and bless her she is suffering, they are on her eye lids, her lip and everywhere you could imagine that is most uncomfortable. Her spots appeared on Saturday and so far more keep appearing, I am hoping she will get better in time for the big day.
poor Georgie having to miss out. I remember Lucy having chicken pox and having to miss out on Christmas at school a few years back. Maybe Lydia won’t get it, I know Leila didn’t when Lucy had it? Although I do believe it’s a disease best to get in childhood, I was 18 when I first caught it.

It sounds like you have a lovely Christmas planned, I do feel rather jealous. At least I won’t be cooking dinner as my hubby has that job now 🙂 Have a wonderful Christmas and I do hope it’s spot free for you all xxx
