The day that Georgie fixed the internet

Home From the mouths of babes The day that Georgie fixed the internet
Oh dear.
Oh dear.

Yesterday was a bit of a disastrous day in our house when it came to technology.

Firstly, our washing machine (which has been making odd noises for a few months now) decided it was the day to give up on life. Well… it does still wash clothes, but it turns off the house electricity while it does it. Several times.

I’m just glad that we had a new electricity board with proper trip switches put in place when we moved in last year, otherwise I would still be trying to figure out how to change the fuse wire in the ancient fuse board that was fitted back when the house was built1.

When I turned the power back on (for the fourth time, not that I was counting), the internet decided that it didn’t want to work any more. Unsurprisingly, our Virgin CrappyHub2 was the culprit. It held it’s hands up in the air and said “yes, I have internet, but no, I’m not going to share it with you!” – the lights were on but nobody was home. I spent about 45 minutes trying to fix the damn thing and then told James he’d have to deal with it when he came home.

Georgie arrived home from her friend’s house, and was rather put out to learn that because the internet was down, she couldn’t watch Peppa Pig.

Georgie “Maybe we could try the ermerzens?”3

Me “No darling, that’s not working either”

Obviously you’ll understand that to a three year old, the lack of ability to watch Peppa Pig on demand is a grave problem indeed. What she came out with next makes me think that perhaps we have let her watch a little too much Peppa Pig on demand.

Georgie “Maybe we could try turning it off.”

Georgie “And then on again.”

Georgie “That’s what Daddy Pig does!”

A minute or two later, the washing machine4 tripped the house again (and again, and again), and when everything was back on… hey presto! The internet was working again.

Clearly, after her own mother heartlessly ignored technical support from a three year old, the washing machine took it upon itself to heed her sage advice and turn everything off for her instead.

That teaches me to ignore Georgie’s advice. My daughter is evidently better than me at fixing all the technical things.

Our new washing machine arrives on Wednesday.

1 Our electrician actually found the job notes & number that the council electrician left behind in the 60s, when they fitted it.

2 Possibly not it’s actual name. But it’s so crappy we went out and spent a fair bit of money on a second router to handle our household wi-fi, and stuck the Virgin box into modem mode.

3 She means Amazon (instant video) – I had to get her to repeat it three times before I understood.

4 Which I had put on in a fit of optimism that the earlier electrical vexations were a coincidence and our washing machine, which literally dances to it’s own, unique, drumbeat, was in fact perfectly fine, and some freakish external power surge was the source of our trip-happy electrics.

  1. I understood Ermerzens! That’s exactly what my 4 year old used to say 😀
My other half is an IT guy and when he’s feeling particularly sarcastic on a Friday he wears a t-shirt saying “Have you tried turning it off and on again?”
