Review: Georgie has a slightly odd sized children’s bed from Ikea, so none of the standard sized mattress protectors fit her bed, and we have had a bit of a nightmare experience trying to find one we like. Most of them out there are fitted, and so we ended up with a horrible crinkly one that tied on, which we paid a tenner for… and felt ripped off when it fell apart in less than 10 minutes of trying to wrestle it onto her mattress. It didn’t stay put, rustled like crazy every time she moved, and wasn’t at all breathable. In comparison to that, this mattress protector from The Little Green Sheep has been an absolute dream.
Her old crinkly plastic mattress protector
Georgie’s mattress measures in at 70cm x 160cm so this cot bed sized protector is just 20cm too short for the strangely long junior bed. Instead of being tied around the mattress, or being similar in design to a fitted sheet, the protector lies flat on the mattress. We laid it down under the sheet at the top end of the bed & found that it being 20cm too short wasn’t at all an issue; Georgie always sleeps at the top end of her bed with her head on her pillow, so I can’t imagine the bottom 20cm of the bed ever being in danger of needing protection!
The Little Green Sheep mattress protector is world’s apart from the typical (and horrible!) crinkly plastic waterproof protectors. I love that it allows Georgie’s skin to breathe, whilst still providing a great level of protection for the bed. It is really soft, feels hard wearing, comfortable and incredibly easy to use.
Georgie tends to save her worst nappies for first thing in the morning and during her afternoon nap, so her sheets can take a bit of a battering on occasion. There is no nappy in the world that wouldn’t leak faced with the kind of onslaught Georgie can deliver, trust me!
We’ve had the mattress protector on for a month or so now, and I am pleased to report that it has done a great job. Georgie has had one or two small leaks, and one huge one where her nappy came completely askew in the night! For the small leaks, we just had to change her sheets as the mattress protector still looked & smelled fine.
The huge nappy disaster of May ’13 was another story altogether though, and it was definitely a very good test of the mattress protector! We stuck all of her bedding, including the mattress protector, in the washing machine for a wash & dry cycle at 40°C. The protector came out looking as good as new, and was put straight back on the bed. The mattress protector was really absorbent, and did a great job protecting the mattress – there wasn’t a mark on it.
This mattress protector costs just under 3 times what we paid for our original crinkly mattress protector, but is definitely more than 3 times better! Although they are a little expensive, the quality is great, it will last years & we would definitely have had to buy several more of the original type we bought – making it better value in the long run, and a lot nicer too. I am giving this 5 stars & will definitely be buying one for Lydia when she moves into her cot in a few months time.
You can also buy their mattress protector in a variety of sizes, including moses basket, crib, cot & single bed, as well as quite a few of the harder to find sizes like the Stokke Sleepi cot.
